Glory to Ukraine!

Wishing Vitaliy well on his return to the front of the fight for freedom: Ukraine

Ukraine is not only waging a successful resistance movement to Putin’s invaders. (More on that soon.)

Ukraine is making history.

Welcome. You can have claimed a place, here, in the front row of history in the making. You can participate in the making of history without leaving your home. Or you can have a front row seat.

Either way you are welcome. Your role is your choice.

What do we mean by making history?

Many historic events disappear into the history books.

That’s not what we mean by history.

Many presidents, kings and queens, generals, champions, even emperors famous long ago quickly disappear into dusty books read only by academics, if that.

The names of these long-gone figures might be glanced at momentarily and grudgingly High School students looking to pass a quiz. Then promptly forgotten.

That’s not what we mean by history.

No, we mean that Ukraine is earning undying fame. Epic history.

The heroic Ukrainians are carving themselves a place to live forever in the mind of mankind. King David. Cleopatra. Emperor Augustus. Boadicea. George Washington. Abe Lincoln.

People who changed the course of history. People will cherish the names of Ukraine’s heroes like Volodymyr Zelensky long after the name of Vladimir Putin is consigned to a footnote.

As thought leader Roy Williams recently wrote at his website, on “The Purpose of Heroes”:

Johnny Molson sent me a video of an elderly Ukrainian woman walking up to a heavily armed Russian soldier, the point man of a force that was occupying her town. Looking him in the face, she said, “Put sunflower seeds in your pocket so flowers will grow when you die.” *

The note that came with the video said, “That’s a Patrick Henry/Paul Revere level story. That’s the sh*t Churchill wished he would have said.”

Johnny’s note caused me to remember two things. The first was a passage from a remarkable op-ed from Yuval Noah Harari in London’s 200-year-old newspaper, The Guardian:

“Nations are ultimately built on stories. Each passing day adds more stories that Ukrainians will tell not only in the dark days ahead, but in the decades and generations to come. The president who refused to flee the capital, telling the US that he needs ammunition, not a ride; the soldiers from Snake Island who told a Russian warship to “go fuck yourself”; the civilians who tried to stop Russian tanks by sitting in their path. This is the stuff nations are built from. In the long run, these stories count for more than tanks.”

See the asterisk? It takes us to:

*The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine, which makes grandma even more of a badass.
